WATER-BASED

Water-based lubricants are the most common—and for good reason. They’re pH-balanced, easy to clean, and safe for vaginal use, which makes them a great everyday choice. They’re also toy-friendly and compatible with both latex and silicone, meaning you can use them with just about anything.

But here’s what most people don’t tell you:

Water-based lubricants only work well if your body is already producing some natural moisture.
If you're experiencing dryness (which is super common due to stress, hormonal changes, or menopause), a water-based lube can absorb into your skin quickly, leaving you feeling like it “disappeared” mid-use. This can lead to irritation, friction, or just an underwhelming experience.

This is also why water-based lube often doesn’t work well on a penis during solo play—there’s no internal moisture to help activate or maintain it, so it soaks right into the skin.

Note: do NOT use water-based lubes for Anal Play as they will absorb fairly quickly into the skin.

When Water-Based Is a Good Fit:

  • You’re already a little naturally wet and just want some extra glide
  • You’re using toys or latex protection
  • You prefer something that rinses off easily and doesn’t stain
  • You want a gentle, pH-safe option for vaginal insertion

SILICONE-BASED

Silicone-based lubricants are known for their luxurious glide and unmatched staying power. Because silicone molecules are thicker and more stable, they don’t absorb quickly into the skin like water-based lubes do—which means you get longer-lasting lubrication with less need to reapply.

This makes silicone an excellent choice for:

  • Penis owners (especially during solo play)
  • Anyone experiencing vaginal dryness
  • Water play (they’re waterproof!)
  • Extended intimacy sessions
  • People who want serious glide without interruption
  • Anal Play

Silicone lubes are especially beneficial for those who are very dry, such as during post-menopause, after childbirth, or in moments where the body just isn’t producing natural moisture. Instead of soaking in, silicone sits on the surface, creating a silky-smooth barrier that reduces friction and enhances comfort.

Bottom line: If you’re looking for a lube that just keeps going, silicone is your go-to. It's perfect for when water-based simply isn't enough—or when you want to keep the moment going without pause.

HYBRID

Can’t decide between water-based and silicone? You don’t have to. Hybrid lubricants combine the lightweight feel of water-based formulas with the long-lasting glide of silicone—giving you the best of both worlds in one silky solution.

Hybrid lubes usually start with a water base, then blend in a small amount of silicone to extend the smoothness and prevent quick absorption. The result? A lightweight, velvety texture that stays slick longer than water-based, but still feels breathable on the skin.

When to Choose Hybrid:

  • You want the toy-friendliness and easy cleanup of water-based, with longer-lasting glide
  • You love the feel of silicone but don’t want something too thick or hard to wash off
  • You need more moisture support than water-based can offer, but don’t feel fully dry
  • You want a lube that works for both vaginal and external play
  • You enjoy a lube that feels natural, not sticky or greasy
